Finding a shape within an image

I have the need to be able find similar shapes within a picture file and was wondering if you could provide direction on how to accomplish this. I have browsed through the forums and couldn't find anything that could point in the right direction.
So what I would like to accomplish is have the user draw a rectangle around a specific shape in the image file then start searching the entire image for shapes that are similar.
If you could please let me know if there is something that already exists within the API that would do this or have an idea on another method that might work to accomplish this it would be greatly appreciated. The images that we are working with are just black and white if that helps at all. Thanks!
