Is 64-bit scanning faster than 32-bit?

Post by jimlewis2 » Mon Oct 18, 2010 5:54 pm

We are using GDPicture version 6 and have customers who want to be able to scan and read images from folders as fast as possible.

1. Should scanning and reading images from files be faster with the 64 bit version of version 7.1 of toolkit than with the 32-bit version of 7.1?

We downloaded 64-bit version 7, and re-complied our programs to test the 64 bit speed .

However, we cannot get 64-bit scanning or reading images from folders to work.

We scanned with both Fujitsu and Epson scanners, which appear to have 64 bit drivers, but maybe there are just 64-to-32 bit thunking DLL's we see from Fujitsu and Epson.

2. Are true 64-bit drivers required to use 64-bit GDPICTURE and are there true 64-bit TWAIN scanner drivers available?

Hi Jim,

Good question.

Based on my experience & tests, native 64-bit TWAIN acquisition brings nothing today.

To scan in pure 64-bit mode you have to:

1- Use a 64 bit OS WinXP, Vista, 7 or 2008 server (of course)
2- Build a native 64-bit app (you can do that with VS studio + GdPicture.NET 64 bit)
3- Have a pure 64-bit version of your TWAIN driver (I never heard about such driver, I just tested virtual 32-bit drivers compiled in 64 bit).

If you meet the 3 conditions I think you just can expect to be able to acquire very huge image from your scanner without Out of memory issue.

GdPicture.NET 7.1 comes with WIA scanning support which supports more scanner in 64-bit mode than TWAIN. But as my humble opinion WIA approach is slower & less featured than TWAIN. Also, there is lot of wrapped manipulation especially for image transfer between scan/OS/applications.

I made some benches between 32-bit & 64-bit WIA acquisition and the conclusion is... Same performance.

So, I think 32-bit TWAIN with file transfer mode, auto scan & auto feed ON are the best options to maximize performances. Or maybe ISIS, but royalty based & only professional scanners are supported.

Hope this helps !

Does GdPicture support ISIS drivers?

We have a number of old clients still using ISIS drivers.

Hi,

No we don't support ISIS scanning. Maybe in 2011...

Kind regards,

Loïc

Is the 32-bit version of GdPicture 7.1 faster than 32-bit version of GdPicture 6.9 for:

1. scanning?

2. for reading TIFF images from folders?

For scanning I don't think you can expect better performances but for image reading probably.
We frequently increase image decoding performances though release cycles.
